According to a new study from the Society of Automotive Engineers, turn signal neglect, either by failing to turn when their signal is activated or not activating the signal at all, happens an astonishing 750 billion times per year.

The study shows that the neglect rate for lane changing vehicles is 48% and turning vehicles 25%. Thats 750 billion times a year that drivers neglect turn signals in just the US. This is one of my biggest driving pet peeves, it is so easy to use turn signals.

“This is a first of its kind report on a subject that amazingly, has never been studied. The turn signal is one of the very original automotive crash prevention devices and this simple driver to driver communication device remains extremely effective, but only when it is accurately displayed as required by law”, states Richard Ponziani, P.E., President of RLP Engineering and author of the report. “The turn signal can no longer be considered ‘optional’ and all drivers have an ongoing duty to use it, just as they have a duty to stop at a stop sign or at a red light” he added.

We asked our Facebook fans, “What is your biggest driving pet peeve”? Below I have shared a few of their comments. Share one of yours on our Patty Peck Honda Facebook wall!

George Gillespie I cant stand people driving in the left lane on a 4 lane road thats for passing and emergency traffic. Also people need there lights on in the rain thats just plain stupid when they dont do it and dangerous. GO BRAVES!!!!!!

Ashley Karen Slow people in the left lane that won’t change lanes!

Tracy Smith Drivers that drive my bumper. They need to learn how to respect the space.

April Allen Hicks When someone pulls out in front of you, only to turn at the next dang street.

Samuel Mingo 1) People who don’t use there signal lights (they are not optional for use) 2) If a fly gets in my car (i will pull over on the side of the road to get one out)

In their February issue, Parenting Magazine test drove the smartest, tech-iest family cars hitting the carpool lane for 2012. They recognized the 2012 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite as one of the year’s “Smartest Family Cars”.

Here is what they had to say about the 2012 Honda Odyssey.

2012 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite

By the numbers: Three rows, eight seats, 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway

Game-changer for lane-changers: The Blind Spot Information System provides an extra pair of eyes on the road (in the form of radar sensors). The door-mounted indicators illuminate when the sensors detect trouble.

One DVD screen, two happy siblings: The split-screen monitor

Parenting editors noted that the Odyssey was chosen for this honor based on its many available family-friendly features, such as its Blind Spot Information System that indicates when radar sensors detect another vehicle that may be positioned in the driver’s blind spot, and the Honda DVD Rear Entertainment System (RES) with a 16.2-inch Ultrawide display capable of simultaneously screening two different sources of video programming side-by-side.

“The Odyssey was conceived as the ultimate family vehicle, and the Odyssey Touring Elite takes that concept to an unprecedented new level,” said Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Being listed among the ‘Smartest Family Cars’ pays tribute to the Honda R&D team in Ohio and manufacturing team in Alabama responsible for designing and building the best minivan on the road.”

How does the 2012 Honda Accord compare to the 2012 Toyota Camry? How about greater interior roominess, superior safety ratings, superior driving dynamics, and lower cost of ownership. These are all part of Accord’s overall excellence and the reason it is a perennial Car and Driver “10Best” winner 26 times over 30 years.

“The [2012] four-cylinder Accord proves that when Honda plays to its strengths, it is better than anyone at producing vehicles with a supernaturally fine (continued from cover) balance of attributes.” Car and Driver, January 2012

2012 Honda Accord On Interior Roominess

While both the Accord and Camry offer seating for five, the Honda Accord offers more passenger volume, as much as 3.3 cu ft more, giving greater comfort. Driver and passengers alike will appreciate greater front seat headroom, legroom, hiproom, and shoulder room in the Accord.

2012 Honda Accord on Safety

Hondas commitment to safety for everyone means crash protection not only for drivers and passengers, but also for the occupants of other vehicles, and injury mitigation for pedestrians. Safety ratings are among our customers top consideration when choosing a vehicle and the 2012 Honda Accord is a top performer.

Honda takes safety seriously as do our customers

The 2012 accord sedan has earned the national Highway traffic safety administration’s (NHTSA’s) best-possible Overall Vehicle Score of five stars, and earned five stars in the overall Frontal Crash and Side Crash safety ratings and in the Rollover safety rating (with a 9.5% risk of rollover). While also earning a five-star overall Vehicle score from nHtsa, Camry only received a four-star NHTSA Frontal Crash safety rating and Rollover safety rating (11.1% risk of rollover).2

The 2012 Accord sedan is an Insurance Institute for Highway safety (IIHs) 2012 TOP SAFETY PICK for “Good” performance, the best possible, in front, side, rollover, and rear tests. electronic stability control (Vehicle stability assist – VSA®) is standard. Camry is also an IIHs 2012 TOP SAFETY PICK.

Accord comes standard with Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, a Honda exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. nothing comparable is available on Camry.

Accord has standard occupant Position Detection system (OPDS) that will deactivate the front passenger’s front-side airbag if a child or a small-statured adult is leaning into the side airbag deployment path. nothing comparable is available on Camry.

Accords Superior Driving Dynamics

Accord is known for its fun-to-drive character, getting high marks from test drive comparisons. Most reviewers like the solid feel and accurate steering not always found in the mid-size class.

Read what others are saying:

“The 2012 Honda Accord’s nicely weighted and communicative steering is one of its strong points.” — Edmunds

“Accords are on the sporty side of the midsize class, with light but direct steering and well-controlled lean in corners.” — Consumer Guide

“The Accord is a favorite of ours because of its willing powertrains and fun-to-drive personality, with good steering feedback and controlled body motions.” — Car and Driver

Accord has an independent double wishbone front suspension and an independent multi-link rear suspension.

Camry also has a multi-link rear suspension but a less sophisticated MacPherson strut front suspension.

Honda Accord Lower Cost To Own

Ownership cost is more then what you originally paid for a car, true cost is what it cost you to own your car over time. According to Edmunds.com True Cost to Own, when all variables are considered, the 2012 Accord LX Sedan owners will save an est. $1,106 over five year driving an average of 15,000 a year compared to the 2012 Toyota Camry LE.

2) Starting with 2011 models, NHTSA has introduced tougher tests and rigorous new 5-Star Safety ratings that provide more information about vehicle safety and crash avoidance technologies. Because of the more stringent tests, ratings for 2011 and newer vehicles should not be compared to ratings for 1990-2010 models. overall vehicle score and frontal crash ratings should only be compared to other vehicles of similar size and weight. for more information go to www.Safercar.gov.

Every dollar raised by the DFM stays in the state to support these efforts. In addition, 89 cents of every dollar raised goes toward the organization’s charitable purposes. For this reason, the DFM received the coveted, Charity Navigator four-star rating- the highest rating awarded to nonprofit organizations, a title given to only 25 percent of all charities. Cars.com called the Pilot “The perfect SUV for buyers who want to comfortably haul the entire family and all of their gear.”

“We’re delighted to see the eight-passenger Pilot’s versatility and family-friendly attributes recognized with this prestigious award,”said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of product planning, American Honda Motor Co. “The newly refined and more fuel-efficient Pilot provides real value and surprising sophistication for anyone shopping in the segment.”

The 2012 Honda Pilot is not new to accolades, earning the top spot in the USA Today, MotorWeek, and Cars.com “$37K and Under SUV Shootout”. If you are researching your next SUV you will want to see how the Honda Pilot stands up to the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse, 2012 Dodge Durango, 2012 Ford Explorer, 2012 Kia Sorrento, 2011 Mazda CX-9 and the 2011 Toyota Highlander.

Here is what MotorWeek had to say about the Winner – 2012 Honda Pilot

Redesigned for 2009, the Pilot’s 250 horsepower V6 has the best fuel economy of the final four. Its squarish styling, more pure SUV than crossover, delivered loads of usable interior room too. Our very well-equipped front driver stickered at $36,170.

TAREK KOCH: The Honda Pilot was a car that I never thought of looking at. It’s more of a boxier car than I would prefer. The aesthetics of it from the outside just don’t appeal to me. Today, surprisingly, after getting in the car and driving the car, I enjoyed it. It was a nice ride. What it offers on the inside of the car makes up for what I don’t necessarily like in the aesthetics of it.

JAMES R. HEALY: Pilot might be the best all around choice, if you can get past the blocky styling. But it’s very practical, it seats 8, has a lot of things that you want in an SUV. Cupholders everywhere, space, sliding seats. Very good package all over.

BEN DAVIS: I always liked the burly chunky brawny style of the Pilot, from the exterior’s point of view. And the inside…it carries over pretty much just the same. It’s a really well done vehicle. Everything you touch is perfectly balanced, be there a switch, stalk, or any kind of button. In my opinion, I think it’s the best of the foreign efforts in this shootout.

KRISTIN VALERA: Honda Pilot has a conversation mirror that flips down from the center console, which is great. A lot of us parents wish we had eyes on the back of our head and this actually gives us that capability.

Read more about the “Shootout” here: MotorWeek review $37K Three-Row SUV/Crossover Shootout. “The perfect SUV for buyers who want to comfortably haul the entire family and all of their gear.” Cars.com

Based on consumer perception data from the company’s Brand Watch study, the Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards honor the automotive brands that have most successfully captured positive consumer attention.

American Honda’s Executive Vice President of Sales John Mendel accepted both awards yesterday at the New York Auto Show from Kelley Blue Book President Jared Rowe. “We are honored to accept two awards that point so directly to Honda’s core tenets,” Mendel said. “With Honda constantly striving to earn trust by providing the finest overall ownership value, it’s inspiring to see those efforts resonating with consumers.”

Read what Kelley Blue Book had to say about the awards and why they choose Honda.

Honda 2012 Most Trusted Brand

Without surprising anyone, our inaugural Most Trusted Brand award goes to a name that’s practically synonymous with reliability and dependability. Honda’s vehicles enjoy a decades-deep reputation as the smart choice in so many of the categories in which it competes.

Honda 2012 Best Value Brand

Many car buyers assume a vehicle’s sticker price is the most significant monetary factor when choosing a car. While it’s certainly an important consideration, Honda’s reputation for superb resale value, exceptional quality and legendary dependability continues to raise the bar in respect to automotive value.
