The 48th Annual Medgar Evers Homecoming

June 8th, 2011 by

On June 12, 1963, civil-rights activist Medgar Evers was assassinated in the front yard of his Jackson home. To honor his memory, the Evers family has held a Medgar Evers Homecoming event each June.

This year marks the 48th Annual Medgar Evers Homecoming. The celebration begins on June 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a gospel memorial show at Friendship Baptist Church.

Patty Peck Honda is excited to attend and support the Medgar Evers Homecoming this weekend. It has become an annual celebration that includes concerts, a parade, a gospel memorial show and other activities. The event has featured lineups of leading blues, R&B and gospel acts. Patty Peck Honda is thrilled to be along for the celebration. The Patty Peck Honda Girl will be attending the festivities, too!

At 7 p.m. on Friday, June 10, a Homecoming Banquet will be at the Greater Mount Calvary Church. The cost for the banquet is $50 and the guest speaker is radio talk-show host Rip Daniels. The money raised from the banquet helps pay for college scholarships.

The Homecoming will conclude Saturday with a parade beginning at 10 a.m. at the Freedom Corner at the intersection of Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevards and a blues concert at the Elks Lodge for $40.

Come join us as we remember this civil-rights activist and his accomplishments. Patty Peck Honda hopes to see you at the festivities this weekend! For more information, call Wanda Evers at 601-948-5835.
