What is Honda Sensing®?

A row of parked new Honda vehicles that feature Honda Sensing

Many Madison-area drivers have asked us, “What is Honda Sensing®?” The simplest answer is that Honda Sensing® is a suite of safety and driver-assist systems that comes standard on many new Honda models. A 2022 Honda press release noted that “Honda Sensing is now standard or available on all new Honda models, found on nearly 5 million Honda vehicles on U.S. roads today.” which is pretty impressive. And certainly good news for Honda drivers and passengers.

Learn more about what is the Honda Sensing® system and the available Honda Sensing® models in this guide from Patty Peck Honda.

What Does Honda Sensing® Include?

The safety technologies that are part of the Honda Sensing® suite are designed to enhance driver awareness on Brandon roads, as well as to help prevent potential collisions. What does Honda Sensing® include?

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™)—Automatically applies the brakes when it detects a possible collision with the vehicle directly in front of you.
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW) – Integrated with CMBS – Uses the monocular camera to detect vehicles and pedestrians ahead and to determine whether a collision is imminent. If so, it will sound an audible alert and trigger a visual warning on the instrument panel and Head-Up Display (if equipped).
  • Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW) —Monitors road markings and will alert you if you begin to leave the road. This system can be customized in the vehicle settings, with the following choices: Normal Model, Wide Mode, Narrow Mode, or Warn Only Mode.
  • Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)—Automatically adjusts steering to keep your vehicle within its lane.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)—Maintains a preset following distance with the car in front of you.
  • Low-Speed Follow (LSF) – This feature extends the automatic following capability of ACC to stop-and-go traffic situations (down to 0 mph).
  • Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) – Works in conjunction with the Lane Keeping Assist System, providing light steering assist all the way to a complete stop if needed. Operating at speeds below 45 mph, TJA helps the driver maintain lane position when traveling at slower speeds, such as might be experienced in congested traffic conditions.
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)—Detects and reads road signs, relaying the information to the driver.
  • Driver Attention Mode – Continually monitors and assesses driver behavior behind the wheel to help determine if the driver is becoming inattentive. If the system determines the driver is tired or inattentive, it issues a warning on the gauge panel for the driver to take a break.

Some features may vary by model.

Can You Turn Off Honda Sensing®?

What if you don’t want to use these features all the time? We understand that there may be times when you don’t want or need certain Honda Sensing® features. If you wish to deactivate any of the features, you’ll find that it is quite easy to do so. For example, if you want to turn off LKS, just push the MAIN button on the steering wheel until the indicators in the instrument cluster are gone

You can also configure the Honda Sensing® settings on the optional central touchscreen. Just tap “Settings,” “Vehicle Settings,” and then “Drive Assist Setup.” This allows you to change distance warnings for CMBS™, RDM warnings, and more.

If you find that you need help modifying or turning off Honda Sensing®, schedule a service appointment at Patty Peck Honda, and our certified technicians will be happy to assist you.

Can Honda Sensing® Be Added by Dealer?

Wondering if Honda Sensing® can be added to your vehicle by the dealer? Unfortunately, the answer is no. The Honda Sensing® package can only be installed when the vehicle is assembled in the factory. The detailed integration of the Honda Sensing® systems includes installing radar, steering wheel controls, and a wide array of sensors. If a dealership were to add Honda Sensing®, the vehicle would essentially have to be dismantled and rebuilt.

The good news is that there are many Honda Sensing® models currently available.
