4th Annual Rachel Myers Benefit Golf Tournament

May 21st, 2010 by

RachelOn June 10, 2010, Patrick Farms will host the 4th Annual Rachel Myers Benefit Golf Tournament.  Rachel, daughter of Lee and Kelly Myers, was born with an AVM (arterial venous malformation) in her brain.  AVM is an abnormal connection between your veins and arteries.  It currently affects around 300,000 Americans with the majority not realizing they have it since very few experience any symptoms at all.  Unfortunately around 36,000 (12%) do suffer from symptoms that vary in severity.  Some symptoms are headaches, back pain, and seizures, which can typically be helped with medication.  Other symptoms vary depending on the location of the AVMs and are much more serious.  For more information about AVMs you can go to Medicinenet.com.

Unfortunately, Rachel is one of the few that is affected severally by AVMs.  She has undergone three embolization procedures to clot off some of the vessels that form the malformation but she will still need more embolization procedures done in the future.  Also, due to her AVM, Rachel has had a stroke and has many developmental delays.  She still isn’t able to walk or talk, and she has limited use of her left hand and foot.  She has to undergo physical and speech therapy weekly.  Rachel is scheduled for an MRI and another embolization at the end of the year.

The golf tournament was started as a way to help the Myers.  All proceeds from the tournament will be given to Rachel and her family to help pay for hospital expenses and her daily home care and therapy.  This is the fourth year for the tournament, two tournaments were previously hosted at Brookwood Country Club, one at Live Oaks, and this year’s tournament will be at Patrick Farms.  Looking to help?  Hole sponsorships are available for $100 and there is a 4-man scramble format which is $400 per team.  Donations are also welcome.  There will be prizes given out for:  hole in one, longest drive, closest to the pin, and additional prizes for winning teams.  The activities begin at noon with a hamburger lunch from The Grille at Patrick Farms and at 1:00 p.m. the shotgun 4-man scramble will begin. This year’s tournament sponsors are Higginbotham Mercedes-Benz and Porsche of Jackson, Southern Imports, European Automotive Engineering, Deviney Equipment, and Patty Peck Honda.  For information regarding registering for the tournament, sponsorships, and donations call Alex Murry 601.260.0420, Chris Partridge 601.940.1017, or Bo Ferguson 601.213.7007.

Lee, Kelly, and brother Mason would just like to say, “We greatly appreciate everyone’s support and generosity.  Rachel is a beautiful girl and loves life.  Thank you!”  So don’t forget to come on out June 10th and help us have a good time and support a great cause.
